Project Location
The proposed project area is located in the Terrebonne Basin of CWPPRA Region 3, near the city of Theriot, in the marshes adjacent to Falgout Canal, between Bayou Dularge and the Houma Navigation Canal.
Project Description
This project involves constructing the 2.585-mile Segment 1 of Reach E of the Falgout Canal Road Levee (a portion of the federally authorized Morganza to the Gulf alignment) using CDBG funding. The larger project the Reach E levee supports will provide protection to the Bayou Dularge communities, encompassing over 2,300 homes within a 13,413-acre area, which suffered severe flooding from Hurricanes Gustav and Ike.
Issue Addressed
The marshes located in the project area have been hydrologically isolated from historical flow patterns by construction of various navigation channels, including the Houma Navigation Canal (HNC) and the Falgout Canal. Because of these barriers, the prevailing hydrologic influence is confined to southern tidal flows, which has resulted in higher salinity and land loss in historically fresh and intermediate marshes.
Project Goals
The goal of this project is to restore project-area salinities to levels that are favorable for fresh and intermediate marshes and to improve the efficiency of freshwater flow within the basin area. By reestablishing the historical north-south flow, the project will expand the zone of beneficial Atchafalaya River influence. This will be done by modifying water flow patterns to include those marsh areas that have suffered catastrophic loss due to hydrologic isolation and salinity intrusion. The marshes are expected to benefit from reduced salinity and enhanced distribution of fresh water and associated nutrients.
