Dedicated Dredging - Point au Fer

projectMap

Project Location

Point au Fer Island is a barrier marsh island approximately 30 miles south of Morgan City. It is in southwest Terrebonne Parish, bordered by the Atchafalaya Bay on the west and the Gulf of Mexico on the south.

Project Description

This project created approximately 67 acres of marsh north of Lake DeCade along the western bank of Minors Canal in Terrebonne Parish. The project was implemented through the coastwide State Dedicated Dredging Program.

Issue Addressed

The marsh environment is an important protective buffer for important population centers and energy infrastructure and port facilities in adjacent inland areas. Its continued decline posed a direct threat.

Project Goals

The project within the state's coastwide Dedicated Dredging Program used a small mobile hydraulic dredge along inland waterways to deposit dredge materials in the marsh to protect, rebuild and nourish the threatened ecosystem.
