Project Description

This project will provide improved fishing and recreational use for Grand Isle State Park in Jefferson Parish and will also provide protection of coastal, nearshore marine habitats, and inland infrastructure. Project features include upgrading the existing fishing pier and extension of the rock jetties on the east shore and extend the north end of the park.

Issue Addressed

The existing roads and nature trails throughout Grand Isle State Park need repairs and upgrades due to damage from repeated flooding. The existing asphalt roads are in poor condition and are now materially unimproved roads. The existing nature trails have incurred damage from repeated floods and storms resulting in loss of limestone surfacing and accelerated deterioration of boardwalks. The existing fishing pier has experienced sediment build up around the pier, effectively reducing water depth and creating a shallow-water habitat, which limits fish species diversity. These conditions have had a negative effect on recreational use of the fishing pier. The northern portion of the east end of Grand Isle is the only shoreline section in the State Park that is un-rocked or does not have rock breakwaters. Shoreline erosion and land loss can be mitigated in this area by construction of shoreline rocking.
